Medford Lakes NJ Canoe Carnival 2008 - Update!

Medford Lakes enjoyed another successful Canoe Carnival for 2008 this past weekend.  As always it was a great time for the community, families and friends to celebrate the uniqueness that's Medford Lakes.

There had originally been weather reports calling for showers in the evening, but the historical trend in Medford Lakes of no rain on the first Saturday in August was once again upheld.  The the festivities went off without any rain, dispite threatening clouds during the day, and even providing a beautiful sunset of the lake.

Around 9 pm the signal was sounded for the Canoe Floats to dismbark from their dock moorings.  As always, it's amazing to see the ingenuity and creativity that displayed by local individuals and groups and on display for the thousands of appreciative spectators surrounding Lower Aetna Lake.

Here are some pictures taken that evening curing the Canoe Carnival...

Medford Lakes NJ Canoe Carnival 2008 - Tonight!

"Happy Canoe Carnival!" Sign

One of the highlights of the Medford Lakes experience is the annual Canoe Carnival held on the first Saturday in August.    Everyone looks forward to this time where the community comes together to celebrate the uniqueness of Medford Lakes and enjoy the fellowship of family and friends in a Mardi Gras type of atmosphere, culminating in a parade of canoe floats on the water.  (That description doesn't do it justice, you have to experience it!)

There are a lot of preparations and planning leading up to this event, including the campaigning and voting on the King and Queen of the Canoe Carnival and the Court.  They were announced yesterday, and will be appearing on one of the procession of floats that will embark from their docks at dark, when the signal to begin is given.   Kids and people of all ages are always fascinated by the creativity and ingenuity that goes into the making of the floats.

Starting at 7pm, on Beach One, there will be a Master of Ceremonies, who will introduce the live entertainment and featured participants prior to the parade of canoe floats, and will then introduce each float as it goes by.

See the Colony Club website for more details about the Canoe Carnival.

Medford Lakes Canoe Carnival 2007

Medford Lakes in Burlington County, New Jersey held it's Canoe Carnival on the first Saturday of August has it has done for the previous 75 years.

It was a warm summer's night and everyone enjoyed the night out with family and friends watching the creativity and entertainment as it floated by on paddle-driven canoes.    For background information about the rules and requirements for floats and a little history of the Canoe Carnival, see the general information link below for some of my previous articles about the carnival and about Medford Lakes.

This year, as in the previous couple of years, the Canoe Carnival was held on Beach #3, while Beach #1 was still being repaired.  Now that Beach #1 is near completion, future carnivals will return to that beach.  However, since Beach #3 residents have had a taste of hosting it, it will be interesting to see if they will develop any new traditions that become part of the annual Medford Lakes event.

Here are some pictures that hopefully will give you some of sights that was experienced...

Medford Lakes Canoe Carnival 2007 On For Tonight

Once again, the Medford Lakes tradition of holding the Medford Lakes Canoe Carnival, under the auspices of the Medford Lakes Colony Club, on the first Saturday in August (based on historic weather records indicating a very high probability of nice weather on that day) will proceed this evening with clear weather and offering another great time for the entire family.Medford Lakes Canoe Carnival Photo and Results Archive

Medford Lakes Canoe Carnival 2006

New Orleans may have it's Mardi Gras, but Medford Lakes in Burlington County, New Jersey has it's Canoe Carnival and it celebrated its 75th Anniversary last (Saturday) night.

The Canoe Carnival is held every year on the first Saturday in August because it was originally determined, after looking at historical records of the weather, that the first Saturday in August has the least amount of bad weather. Except for a few exceptions that weather pattern has held over the years and last night was a another perfect night.

The temperature was perfect, the night was clear, almost a full moon. On the lake where the Canoe Carnival is held, as well as the other surrounding lakes (there are 23 in Medford Lakes), the decorative lights and the moonlight  reflecting on the water was beautiful and breathtaking.

The basic concept for participation in the Canoe Carnival "parade" of floats (and we mean it literally) is that you are allowed one or two canoes with one paddler per canoe. You can mount and build anything you want on top of and between the canoes, but it has to float, be able to be paddled around the lake where the Carnival is held and kept in control -- at night when completely dark (usually after 9pm).  When it is determined dark enough to begin, a signal is given and the floats cast off from the various docks locate around one the host lake and they make one revolution around the lake.

Participants can be individuals, but usually groups (both young and old) take on the task of coming up with a concept, getting it approved, then designing and constructing the float. There is almost no limit to what they can and do come up with, but the larger ones consist of two canoes supporting a platform with generators for lights and music, moving props and live performers... as long as it floats. Remember, it can only be propelled by at most one paddler per canoe and must be seen (and usually heard) at night.

And what's a carnival without it's Queen, King and Court? Medford Lakes is no exception. A very competitive campaign leads up to the when the whole community votes for the queen and king and their court of runners-ups.

The community celebrates the day of the Canoe Carnival with family barbecues, hosting of dinners and even catered parties, after which everyone attends the festivities at a main lake where the Canoe Carnival is held. While the sun is setting, various forms of entertainment are provided, until the sky gets completely dark, then a signal is given and the floats cast off from their dockings.  People watch from the lake beach, anywhere they can stand or set up a lawn chair.

This is a large event, streets are blocked to pedestrian traffic, parties are going on in every home along the lake and they invite everyone they know to come and join in on the food, festivities and floats.

Below are some of the scenes, starting in the afternoon prior to the Canoe Carnival, then after dark on the lake's beach and finally shots of some of the the floats that participated in the Canoe Carnival.
