Replacing Motorcycle Handle Bar Grips

I decided it was time to replace the old handle bar (rubber) grips on my motorcycle this past weekend.   That is something I had never done and so, when I started to pull them off, I quickly realized that the process was not going to be as easily as I had assumed.

Fortunately, with a little help from various sites on the Internet, I was able to complete the task with a minimum of frustration.  Here are my recommendations if/when you decide to replace your grips...

1. If grips are loose, you can pull while working them back and forth.  However, on the throttle handle, it will of course move with you and you will also have to be careful not to damage the throttle handle.

2. If grips are stuck and will not budge, you can attempt using the following options:
a.  Gently work a screw driver between the grip and handle bar to loose grip, pulling grip off as you do it.
b.  If grip has a closed end (which just a small air hole), try using an air compressor to plow air into end air hold of grip to loosen it from handle bar.

3.  Use knife or razor blade or similar cutting instrument and cut off grips. (NOTE: Make sure that you do not cut so deeply that you cut into the throttle handle bar (which is often made of plastic).

3. Once removed, take rubbing (Isopropyl) alcohol and clean handle bars and thoroughly moisten the inside of the grips.  They should then slide on with minimal effort.  Once installed, allow time for alcohol to try.

4. If a grip is loose (slides off relatively easy), then use tape or similar to wrap around handle bar (test out one wrap at a time).   Suggestion: If you may want to remove the grips in the near future, then only wrap end area of grip -- not the whole area grips will be covering.
