Introduction to the New Jersey MVC (formerly, the NJ DMV)

In 2003, New Jersey reorganized and renamed it's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
New Jersey MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission - NJ DMV)
According to the NJ MVC's web site, "We initiated fundamental changes and reforms, placing customer service at the top of our priorities. We have also increased our security levels at every Agency throughout the state, making it more secure for you to conduct business with us.

Since the Agency's restructuring in 2003, we have created the nation's most secure Digital Driver License (DDL) with more than 20 embedded security features. New Jersey has been cited as having one of the top two most thorough and secure ID verification policies in the country.

As part of our facelift, we have enhanced our online features to make your experience with MVC more convenient and enjoyable. We now offer a multitude of services on our web site hoping to eliminate unnecessary trips to your local MVC Agency."   The NJ MVC also offers an online MYMVC service.

While no organization is perfect, from my recent experience it did result in reducing the wait time at most locations (unless you come at a peak time of the month -- usually the beginning or end of the month or before or after an official holiday).

The NJ MVC's web site lists locations, hours of operation, services offered (titles, licenses, inspections; written, eye and driving tests, etc.)  Note that each location provides a subset of all services offered statewide.  You may have to travel to more than one location to complete a transaction.  There are a few situations where processing can only be completed at the Trenton location.  However, your local office will be able to direct you accordingly.
