The EPA recently posted on it's web site updated information discussing the results of two studies showing definitive evidence of an association between residential radon exposure and lung cancer. A North American study and a European study, both combined data from several previous residential studies. These two studies go a step beyond earlier findings. 
 
Radon is a natural radioactive gas that you can't see, smell or taste. Its presence in your home can pose a danger to your family's health. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America and claims more than 20,000 lives annually.  (Source: EPA)

As stated in a previous post, in our region it is highly recommended to test for radon if you have a basement (or have flooring that is below ground level), especially if it is a basement in which you will be spending a lot of time.  Radon tests are relatively inexpensive for the peace of mind they can provide with knowing that your property is not exposing you to unhealthy doses of radon or, if it is high, that now it can be easily remediated.
