Beige Book Released By Federal Reserve For July 2008

The Federal Reserve recently published their latest issue of the Beige Book. It is available online.

Beige BookThe following is a brief list of it's overall (national) summary findings (using data as of July 14th):

1. Economic activity slowed somewhat since the last report.  St. Louis said activity was stable and San Francisco reported little or no growth. Cleveland and Minneapolis reported slight increases in economic activity, while Dallas described growth as steady and moderate.

2. Consumer spending was sluggish or slowing over most of the county due to higher gas and food prices.  Tax rebates boosted sales for some items, such as electronics.   Vehicle sales were poor, especially for SUVs and trucks (with some dealers refusing to accept them as trade-ins), but solid or increasing for hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles (in the Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas Districts).  Retail inventories were reported as satisfactory. Sales at discount stores were growing in the Philadelphia, Richmond, St. Louis, Dallas, and San Francisco Districts, and New York reported brisk sales in New York City.

3. Tourism was mixed.  By contrast, tourist activity to mountain areas of the Richmond, Minneapolis, and Kansas City Districts was characterized as stronger, possibly due to residents vacationing close to home due to high gasoline prices. New York reported strong tourism activity in New York City, including for Broadway shows and at Manhattan hotels.

4. Reports were mixed for non-financial service industries with strengths in IT and heath care industries offestting weaknesses in others. Most services contacts expected flat activity heading forward.

5. Manufacturing activity declined or remained weak in most Districts, with exceptions of Cleveland, St. Louis, and San Francisco reporting stable or slightly increasing activity. Housing related products continuued to decline.  St. Louis noted increased demand for small and hybrid type cars.  Energy related equipment saw increased demands, including increases in orders for wind turbine parts.   Food processing was operating at or near peak capacity with persistant demand.  Export market still strong with some reports of slowing.

6. Commercial real estate activity weakend or remained sluggish in most of the Districts. Vacancies were increasing, but office rents remained stable in Philadelphia.  Minneapolis District noted rent increases and positive absorption in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area office market.

7. Residential real estate markets declined or remained weak in all districts.  New home construction continued to decline with Philadelphia seeing a rise in cancellations. Inventory levels of new and existing homes were still high or rising, with a few exceptions.

8. Lending growth was restrained, with residential showing more weakness than commercial lending. Banks loan quality showed deterioration.

9. Crop conditions were generally mixed.  Districts were concerned that rising input costs were eating into profit margins.

10. Energy activity strengthened.  Oil producers reported increases in oil and gas drilling, including unconventional sources.

11. Employment hiring was unchanged or slightly weaker since last report.   Demand remained high for skilled workers and for workers in the energy sector.

12. Businesses contacted reported increases in input costs since the last report and expect higher prices in the future.  However, sluggish demand is making it difficult to raise prices in areas such as Philadelphia.

Note: This represents the national summary for ALL districts combined. The report also provides more detail on each item summarized nationally, as well as reporting by each district on all items.

Help Your Family Stay Safer In and Around the Water With Interactive Tool

Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor recreation, especially when involving water.

Fun In The Water"Home Safety Council (HSC) research shows that drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury-related death across all age groups, yet a recent study commissioned by the national, nonprofit organization found that only six percent of respondents have taken any action to prevent drowning incidents at home. Of those polled, fewer than 10 percent have put in a four-sided fence that goes all around the pool or installed a gate that closes and locks by itself - two of the key water safety tips recommended by the Home Safety Council."  (Source: HSC)

Besides never swimming alone and always completely fencing in your pool there are other water safety tips that you need to be mindful of to effectively protect your family...

Saving Money On Office Productivity Software

When anyone mentions "office productivity" software, the first thing that comes to mind is Microsoft Office which dominates the market. For businesses and personal users, especially for complex financial reporting and corporate collaboration, Microsoft Office may be their only option.

However, many others may be able to substitute, with no noticable loss of features, one of the free offices productivity suites that provide at least wordprocessing, spreadheet and presentation functions, such as IBM Lotus Symphony (lotus.com);  OpenOffice (openoffice.org); Google Docs (google.com/a) and Zoho Apps (zoho.com).

I have always liked the IBM Lotus Symphony, which has a long prestigious heritage (AMI Pro, VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, etc.), although it was never able to overcome the Microsoft Office juggernaut, as is a robust suite with many unique features and sophisticated productivity aids.

I believe IBM's mistake in loosing out to Microsoft Office was when IBM allowed Microsoft to jump ahead with graphical interfaces (remember, both Microsoft and IBM office software started out with text only interfaces) and IBM never caught up, being weighted down with viewing everything as a utility for it's massive and complex Lotus Notes collaboration system.

One of the other hinderences to IBM Lotus Symphony obtaining market share was that it was relatively expensive, particularly for developers. value-added resellers and consultants to own and learn about it for themselves; whereas, Microsoft made it very easy and kept the cost low for them to acquire and, of course, they became the ones that helped evangelize Office for Microsoft.

OpenOffice, primarily supported by the Sun Corporation, is a strong replacement candidate with it's improving robustness and the ability to run on the most popular operating systems (Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS).  I have downloaded OpenOffice and have played with it enough to know that it provided a full set of features by which I could be productive if I was relying solely it.  However, OpenOffice will require some retraining (minor if you only use basic functions) and you may loose some compatibility with Microsoft Office documents if you are doing any collaboration.

In my situation, I make use of the other applications in the full Microsoft Office suite that are not available in Lotus Sympany or OpenOffice, so I still rely on the latest version of Microsoft Office.

Lotus Symphony and OpenOffice are both software packages that you download and install on your computer.  They run stand-alone and you do not need to be online to use them.

Google Docs and Zoho Apps are accessed with a browser on the Internet.  You do not download and install them on your computer.  This can be an advantage to many, as you can access and run them from any computer (and you don't have to install additional copies on each computer you use them) as long as you have a standard Internet browser (i.e., Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.).

While Zoho may offer a wide breadth of applications, I don't believe either offer all the depth of features and functions that the stand-alone versions currently offer.  Google offers a version with more features for enterprises, but it is not free.  Both require you to have an account and login to use their applications.

For a good comparison of the pros and cons of the four office productivity suites, I direct you to Infowold's recent "Test Center review: Office killers pack some heat".

It This A Good Time to Buy or Sell Real Estate?

Many of us, who are contemplating buying or selling real estate, are trying to predict the real estate market and reduce our risk of making a bad financial decision. Should I Sell or Buy Real Estate

A question is usually asked, "Is now a good time to buy or sell real estate, especially a residence?"

Those wanting to buy may be concerned about purchasing a residence that may continue to lose value.  Those wanting or needing to sell are worried about trying to get out at least what they have invested plus some appreciation.  If they don't have to sell now, they be considering holding off until the market improves and stay in the house or rent it.    So, what's the best answer?

The simple answer is, "It depends."

Please let me explain...

Is Now A Good Time to Buy or Sell Real Estate?

A Plan For U.S. Energy Independence

Oil tycoon, T. Boone Pickens, is promoting a plan he has developed to reduce America's independence on foreign oil though the alternate use of natural gas and expanded harnessing of our greatest natural resource: wind, along with solar energy.

Check out the "Pickens Plan" for more details about how he proposes this can be done.

Pickens, who definitely understands oil and energy, has proven over the years that he fully understands the economics of supply and demand.

I remember listening to him a couple of years ago when he was interviewed on cable news station. In answer to a question, he held up one hand (palm down), indicating the level of supply and then held the other hand higher indicating demand. He stated that supply was limited, so demand would have to be reduced. In order for that to happen he suggested, the price of gas would eventually have to increase between $4 and $5 gallon before it would have a significant impact on public consumption habits.

While all current and planned usage was under the legal FCC limits, it was decided to be safe and limit emissions to just half of the projected output.

There are still further approvals that need to take place, including T-Mobile appearing before the zoning board with it's updated proposals.

The next Medford Zoning board meeting will be on Wednesday, July 16.

Health Alert: Lamp Oil Being Mistaken For Apple Juice

The New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIE), recently released a heath alert warning of poisonings -- some leading to hospitalization and at least one death -- that have been caused by accidentally drink lamp (or torch) oil, believing it to be apple juice.

NJPIES Poison HotlineAccording to various news sources, the people that have been poisoned ranged in age from 8 to over 80.

Because the liquids appear almost identical and are often packaged similarly, it is very easy to mistake one for the other if not paying careful attention.

According to Bruce Ruck, PharmD. of NJPIES, "It is very important to recognize lamp oil bottles closely resemble juice containers. When accidentally taken by mouth, such lamp oils can enter the lungs causing pneumonia and death. Jugs containing lamp oils must be stored in a locked cabinet away from storage of food and drinks."

Click here for full NJPIE alert and photos comparing the two substances.

Note: Evidently, this problem is nationwide as there are reports (e.g., state of Illinois) of approximately 70 deaths occuring over past two years caused by drinking lamp oil.
